Music is a subject for all! It builds your thinking skills and your confidence. Engagement with music at Rochdale Sixth Form College will make you a more rounded individual with the ability to establish yourself as a proper musician. If you want to understand the building blocks of music, improve your practical ability, make friends and transform your ability as a composer, you should study music at Rochdale Sixth Form College. A level music is a rigorous course intended for students with a knowledge of western music theory, excellent reading skills and the ability to read western music notation. Music at Rochdale Sixth Form College is assessed both formatively and summatively. In terms of formative assessment, you spend a significant portion of your week in close contact with both your classroom and peripatetic music teachers where you will be given regular verbal feedback. Music is suitable for students who desire a career in music, or want to study a subject that they are truly passionate about.

Available courses for this department. We offer a range of courses from A Level and IB to instrumental and vocal lessons, ensemble activities, and theoy classes. These latter courses are open to all students whether they take music or not. The following information is provided for prospective students and their parents. This course is for students who have some experience of playing and performing music who may well have taken GCSE music and who would like to further their knowledge and skills in Performance, composing and in Listening and Understanding music. In composition we develop your skills to be able to write harmony and to compose a theme and variations as well as songs. We would like students who start the course to be at least grade 5 level on their instrument or voice, and it is very helpful to have taken grade 5 theory. We study a range of music looking at specific works to extend knowedge of analysis skills and listening abilites.
If you live and breathe music, this is the course for you. Studying this qualification will provide you with the foundations for starting your career within the music industry. The course will encourage you to build skills, essential to the current music industry including Performance Studies, Songwriting, Recording and Live Sound and Music Business. As you work with our industry professional teaching staff to develop your creative and performance skills, you will gain an insight into the range of career paths available. This is a highly practical course on which you will learn the skills needed to thrive in the ever-changing modern music industry. As part of your study programme, you will develop your performance skills on your chosen instrument, further your songwriting skills and learn about the technology of both live sound and studio recording. You will study a number of musical genres and be encouraged to develop your own style of performance, through regular formal and informal performance opportunities throughout the year.
