The first live album from the Philadelphia band feels loose and sounds immaculate, cementing their status as one of the premier live bands of their generation. You can hear it in most of their songs. Before releasing their breakthrough, Lost in the Dream , which sped their graduation from small rooms to huge festivals, the War on Drugs were a four-piece touring group that excelled at making those small rooms feel enormous. Their rise in popularity precipitated their upgrade to a bigger lineup, which now includes baritone sax player Jon Natchez, multi-instrumentalist Anthony LaMarca, and mean-mugging drummer Charlie Hall in addition to Granduciel and longstanding members Dave Hartley on bass and Robbie Bennett on keys. Granduciel is a much different vocalist in the live setting than he is on record: more punctuated, less delicate, and even a little less melodic. His soloing, meanwhile, consistently sounds more articulated as he rips into these songs on a tailwind of spontaneous inspiration. This one, regrettably, is not that performance, but a later one that replicated and refined the new version.
But the Drugs are anything but a one-man band. Before the pandemic, the band had been on track to release an album of new songs in Each track takes its time moving from contemplation to catharsis, slowly strengthening before locking into overdrive and lifting off like a jet engine, like only a great live band can do. But the pandemic, of course, scuttled everything. It streamed for a paying audience in July and was released theatrically earlier this month.

By Jonathan Cohen. When that proved impossible, Granduciel returned to the live mixes for the first time in eight months and moved that project to the front burner instead. I love to sing it, because maybe someone out there thinks I wrote it, which … I should be so lucky. I think that really comes across in our show. For me, that has been the most enjoyable part of the whole thing. He has such a rich knowledge of our show, too. I remember everything, like what guitar I played or if I flubbed a solo, and he remembers all that as well. He just runs the show. He runs my show, for sure.
