Brazil has made progress on tobacco control in recent years. However, people continue to die and become sick needlessly, and the costs to society from tobacco use continue to mount. Tobacco harms the health, the treasury, and the spirit of Brazil. Every year, more than of its people are killed by tobacco-caused disease. Complacency in the face of the tobacco epidemic insulates the tobacco industry in Brazil and ensures that tobacco's death toll will grow every year. Several studies worldwide have pointed to depression and anxiety symptoms as being related to adolescent smoking. The aim of this study was to investigate, the potential link of cigarette smoking with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation and the influence of gender on these relationships in Brazilian adolescents.
