Silver Jubilee 1935

In 1935 the park was chosen as the venue to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. Again the town spared no time or expense in decorating the streets and houses, and on this occasion the advent of electricity in the town enabled the Church, Market Cross and Cenotaph to be floodlit throughout the weekend “with powerful arc-lamps”.

Programme.
The programme of events included military displays, comic football match, children’s sports, motorcycle gymkhana, hosepipe football match by the fire brigade, a grand concert by a local Concert Party supported by an orchestra, and fireworks as a grand finale. A grand procession headed by the Town Band also left Prince’s Road en route for the Park.

Gates.
Jubilee Day also marked the dedication of a pair of oak gates erected at the Charlton Road entrance in memory of John Kyte Collett. They were designed by Mr CD Wainwright and made by Mr Barnard in his workshop at Kilver Street. A plaque was also fixed to one of the supporting pillars and was unveiled by Sir Frederick Berryman.
